Developed, Written and Performed by Solo Theater Artist MARCELLA GOHEEN, The Maria Project tells the compelling story of the reverberation of a family secret kept over three generations. The Maria Project - originally performed at Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2007 - played New York City in the Fall, 2010 - which inspired the City of New York Mayor Bloomberg’s Office to proclaim October 13, 2010, The Maria Project Day. Using documentary footage, text and percussion, and chronicling the life of Maria Salazar, this groundbreaking solo piece uplifts the family stories and secrets in all of us. This performance is in celebration of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, 2011. The Maria Project has toured all over the country. Goheen was described as "...a powerful and authoritative performer..." by the LA Times, and the story was described as "...powerful ...harrowing..." by CITYPAGES in Minneapolis and "...a compelling and moving Spanish American's family legacy..." by the New York Times.
