Description:

“It was a ReVue unlike any other, a blend of vaudeville, Fellini and Cirque du Soleil. Ms. Bell proved that she had her finger on the future of dance where ballet and hip-hop coexist on the same plane.”

-2010 Best in Dance, Pittsburgh Gazette

Sidra Bell Dance New York is a NYC-based contemporary dance troupe presenting innovative, provocative and kinetic dance theater works. Sidra Bell is an emerging and sought after voice in contemporary dance with a strong female vision creating work that ignites the imagination and explores the complexities of the human condition. The company's repertoire features pieces that are simultaneously haunting, emotionally transporting, complex, dynamic, articulate, sensual and highly physical. The company has become known for unconventional, forward-looking works that push past dance’s traditional vocabulary, venues, and boundaries. The vocabulary is risky, elegant, fantastical, and darkly romantic with original themes and larger than life characters. The content approaches the psyche illuminating themes that are sometimes tragic and often life affirming.

With a process that values research over product the company has created several highly successful installation and theater pieces including site-specific works “Chimeras” (Stella Adler Studio of Acting) and “House Unrest” (The Gershwin Hotel), and the award winning “Conductivity,” a duet for dancer Shamel Pitts of Batsheva Ensemble and actor Robbie Sublett (graduate of NYU/Stella Adler). Each work uses a visceral and raw sense of physicality to create atmosphere and works that feel pictorial, vivid, and like mini tapestries evoking a sense of future and past.

The company and the work of Sidra Bell has been presented at such prestigious venues and series as Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out Series, Tribeca Performing Arts Center, CityParks Dance Foundation, Tangente (Montreal), Place des Arts (Montreal), Usine C (Montreal), Thelma Hill Performing Arts Center, Ballet Builders New Choreographers on Point, Kelly-Strayhorn Theater, Stella Adler Studio of Acting MAD AIR Series, Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater, Baryshnikov Arts Center, The Margie Gillis Foundation, The Harlem Stage E-Moves Series, Symphony Space, The Schomburg Museum, The Gershwin Hotel, Westchester Arts Council and Joyce SoHo. Sidra Bell has received recent commissions from Ailey II, Ballet Austin, The Sacramento Ballet, Springboard Danse Montreal, National Choreographers Initiative, Ballet Divertimento (Montreal), Canadian Children’s Dance Theater (Toronto), Purchase College Conservatory of Dance with the St. Luke’s Orchestra, Arts Umbrella (Vancouver), Perry Mansfield, Bessie Schonberg Choreographers Residency at The Yard, and The Juilliard School. Her critically acclaimed work “Conductivity” was invited to the Stuttgart Solo-Dance-Theater Festival and the Hanover International Choreographers Competition in Germany. It was awarded a 2nd place prize for performance in Stuttgart and will be toured at The Athens International Dance Festival and in Germany in 2009.

Sidra Bell is a sought after teacher throughout the United States and Canada. She has had the privilege of teaching technique, creation, and improvisation at esteemed institutions and projects including National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, Stella Adler Studio of Acting Movement Department, SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Dance, The Ailey School, Greenwich Academy, Arts Umbrella, Ballet Divertimento, Movement Invention Project with New Jersey Dance Theater, Springboard Danse Montreal, and Peridance Master Class Series.

The company has attracted a generation of young dancers and artists who have also danced for renowned companies around the world. This burgeoning collective features dancers of the highest technical level with incredible charisma and intellect. Sidra Bell Dance New York began as a community initiative in Harlem, NY. Bell, a graduate of Yale University and native New Yorker, was awarded a grant from the Yale Entrepreneurial Society to found Sidra Bell Dance New York that was to be based at The Joseph P. Kennedy Center in Harlem. For three years the company hosted sold-out seasons featuring live jazz ensembles directed by gold/platinum award winning producer and composer Dennis Bell at the center. The company also hosted dance and theater classes for youth on Saturdays. Daughter of musicians/composers/educators Dennis and Claudette Bell, Sidra Bell was raised in an environment that fostered collaboration, creation, community activism, education, and artistry. Bell frequently collaborates with her father most recently on high profile commissions for The Juilliard School, Ailey II, Ballet Austin, and The Sacramento Ballet. “Refrain for a Broken Chorus” featured an original score by Dennis Bell played by The Juilliard Jazz Ensemble and danced by The Juilliard Dance Ensemble at The Peter Jay Sharp Theater.
