On September 26, 1915, Harold Chapin was killed at the age of twenty-nine in an act of heroism during the Battle of Loos. The London theater community lamented Chapin’s death with a memorial performance at the Queen’s Theater, while his wartime letters from the front were published as Soldier and Dramatist. “We do not know how much the stage lost in the death of Harold Chapin, but we do know from these letters that the country lost a man of fine fibre and of a clear vision of life and its meaning,” wrote The Guardian in 1916. On Monday, September 28th we will honor the 100th anniversary of Chapin’s untimely death. George Robb, author of British Culture and the First World War (available for purchase in our lobby), will discuss the “Lost Generation” of WWI and selections from the playwright’s wartime letters will be performed.
