Ivy Baldwin Dance
Keen (Part 1)

Choreographed by Ivy Baldwin
Performances by Ivy Baldwin, Anna Carapetyan, Eleanor Smith and Katie Workum
Sound Design by Justin Jones

Choreographer Ivy Baldwin’s latest work, a new piece commissioned by the Glass House, brings a powerful yet often hidden emotion to life within the Glass House and its dramatic grounds. Keen (Part 1) embodies the emotional and physical experience of loss, memory and holding love, and filters it through the lens of serene Modernism and chaotic wilderness. An all-woman cast dressed in red alternate between synchronized movements and stark solitary wanderings––the sum of their movements create a whole, vulnerable and hopeful self. Juxtaposing ancient rites of mourning with threads inspired by the 1967 “Country Happening” at the Glass House, a performance of the great modern dance choreographer Merce Cunningham and the Velvet Underground, Keen (Part 1) both adheres to and departs from formal dance structures to share an unbridled and varied experience of grief. Keen (Part 1) is a site-specific dance performed by Baldwin, Anna Carapetyan, Eleanor Smith, and Katie Workum, with a live score by Justin Jones.

This performance made possible by the Tell Foundation, with special thanks to Ed + Catherine Romer.

Ivy Baldwin Dance, formed in 1999 by NYC-based choreographer, performer, and teacher Ivy Baldwin, is a company dedicated to the creation and performance of new contemporary dance. Baldwin works collaboratively with the dancers and designers of IBD to give form to the quirks of the human experience—the tragedies and trials; the constancy of loss and love; our often comic vulnerability as we walk around in delicate skin-shells, a tender package of failings and fears and fragile organs. Since its inception, Ivy Baldwin Dance has been presented by the Brooklyn Academy of Music (2014 Next Wave Festival), New York Live Arts, Dance Theater Workshop, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, New Museum of Contemporary Art, The Chocolate Factory, Dixon Place, Danspace Project at St. Mark's Church, Movement Research at the Judson Church, Symphony Space, CATCH in P.S. 122's COIL Festival, and La MaMa E.T.C, among others. The Company has toured nationally and internationally including: Tanz im August in Berlin, Germany, Dans Contemporan International Dance Festival in Bacau, Romania, American Dance Institute (ADI), REDCAT, Irvine Barclay Theater, Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and Appel Farm Arts and Music Center.

Ivy Baldwin has choreographed eight commissioned evening-length works for her company, Ivy Baldwin Dance. Baldwin has received many awards and fellowships, including a 2014 Guggenheim Fellowship in Choreography, Artist-in-Residence positions at BAM, Movement Research, Abrons Arts Center, and ArtistNe(s)t in Romania, and fellowships from the Bogliasco Foundation in Italy. Her work has been supported by the Jerome Foundation, William and Karen Tell Foundation, Trust for Mutual Understanding, Puffin Foundation, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Dugas Family Foundation, Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, Lumpkin Family Foundation, and Kaatsbaan International Dance Center. Baldwin has choreographed new works for The Wooden Floor, Barnard College, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, and The New School, among others.
