Oaknoll Retirement Center commemorates its fiftieth anniversary by commissioning a concert production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic musical South Pacific.
Directed by Josh Sazon with music direction by Ed Kottick, the concert boasts of some of the most renowned performers in the area, including John Muriello of the University of Iowa School of Music as the Frenchman Emile de Becque, Kristen Behrendt-de Grazia as Nurse Nellie Forbush and Marcia Hughes as the South Pacific native Bloody Mary. It also features a twenty-four member ensemble and a thirty-one piece orchestra conducted by Dr. Kottick, Professor Emeritus of the University of Iowa School of Music.
"A concert version is not a full-staged production of the show," explains director Sazon. "It is a semi-staged production of the musical, with no sets or lights or costumes. What remains is the drama and the music, albeit slightly abridged -- we expect our show's running time to be far less than the three plus hours that it would take if we mounted a full production. But at the end of it all, we hope that, over sixty years after its premiere on Broadway, the production manages to convey the power, the great good humor, the timeliness and timelessness of this classic work of American theater."
Based on James A. Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning book "Tales of the South Pacific", the musical takes the audience back to the seminal days of the Greatest Generation: of nurses and Seabees of the Pacific theater in World War Two. It tells the story of a young nurse fresh out of Little Rock Arkansas romanced by an older Frenchman, and a young Marine who falls for an innocent young native girl. Enlivening the action are some of the most memorable tunes that have come out of the Great White Way, including Some Enchanted Evening, Younger Than Springtime, A Wonderful Guy, Cockeyed Optimist and Bali Ha'i.
