On April 28th and 29th, the Sugar Space Foundation will present the works of three emerging choreographers, complete with live pre-show performances by Will Baxter Music and other local guest artists. Graduate students in their first year of studies at the University of Utah, the emerging choreographers invite you to an intimate viewing of their first investigations of their thesis journeys. The courageous, inquisitive, and stunning dancers hail from the U’s School of Dance, including alumni, graduate and undergraduate students, pre- and professional performers. About the Works: Brooklyn Draper’s new piece, The Great Pretenders, considers how we are perceived by others. As she plays on the scale of timidity and boldness, she questions if we really want others to see us as we truly see ourselves. And They Didn’t Even Know, by Samijo Kougioulis Meier, explores the damage that can be caused to mind and soul by the subjugation of one person by another, considering how our interactions during a crucial time period of growth have the power to steer us toward enlightenment or destruction. Nichele Van Portfleet’s new dance considers the human as both animal and social, confronting the obstructions we face that seem to keep us from continuing forward in our lives—obstructions that leave us divided. With a new sound score by musician Casey Van Portfleet, tension and sensuality mingle as the trio of dancers navigate through unsteady physical architecture. This performance is made possible by the generosity of the Sugar Space Foundation Artist in Residency Program.
