Homecoming celebrates the impact that Iowans are making on the national and international jazz scene by bringing a local native back home to headline a special concert.

Iowa City native Gabe Medd returns to the Corridor for the inaugural Homecoming concert Nov. 4 at the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts.

The concert is a fund raiser which will support KCCK’s jazz education programs, Schoolhouse Jazz and The Corridor Jazz Project, which serve nearly 4,000 students each year and are offered free to area schools.

Gabe Medd has been playing trumpet since the age of ten, and was a familiar figure through junior high and high school, playing not just at West High, but at the Iowa City Jazz Festival, Jazz Under the Stars, and many other regional events. He’s a graduate of the Julliard School of Music, has been mentioned in the Wall Street Journal, won the “Best Undergraduate Soloist” award from Downbeat Magazine, and was a semi-finalist for the 2014 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition. Wynton Marsalis called Gabe one of the ten “Next Generation of Jazz Greats” in Jet Magazine.

Gabe now makes his home in New York City, where he performs at legendary clubs like the Jazz Standard, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, and the Blue Note, on his own and in groups like The Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, the Julliard Jazz Orchestra, and the legendary Mingus Big Band.

For his Homecoming, Gabe will perform an original program for Trumpet and Guitar with Gabe Schnider, also of New York City. Schnider has competed in the International Guitar Competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival and was featured at the 2016 Marciac Jazz Festival as a member of Wynton Marsalis' band, "The Young Stars of Jazz."

During their stay, Gabe and Gabe will also do a clinic with a group of the Corridor’s top high school players, who will join them at the concert.

Tickets for Homecoming are $47, with a special $17 price for students with a school or college ID (ticket price includes a $2 facility fee.) There will be a dessert reception and meet-and-greet with the musicians after the concert.
