Based on the 1968 film, Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell (which also inspired the book for the Broadway musical Mamma Mia!), Carmelina focuses on an Italian woman who has raised her teenage daughter to believe her father was an American who died heroically in World War II. She goes on to collect child support checks from three American soldiers, each of whom thinks he is the father. Complications arise when all three soldiers come to visit her majestic village for a musical trip down memory lane.

Even though the original Broadway production only ran for 17 performances, the lush Lerner and Lane score received a 1979 Tony Award nomination for Best Score (losing to Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd).
