January 22, 29, February 5, 12Class Description:
Why are there so many puppetry styles? In this NEW introductory class, participants will explore the wide world of puppetry traditions through the lens of dramatic storytelling. We’ll discover why professional puppeteers make certain creative choices, and how different puppet designs and production concepts have wildly different impacts on audiences. After surveying the work of contemporary puppet masters from Jim Henson to Julie Taymor, we’ll investigate how to create our own puppet interpretations of familiar stories. We’ll also learn fun strategies for generating ideas through improvisation, mock-up building, and other active forms of “research.” Everyone will leave with a solid understanding of different puppetry styles and everything you need to start envisioning your own puppet production concepts.
This is an introductory-level class: participants of all interests, backgrounds, and abilities are welcome. Graduates have gone on to take advanced classes, create their own works, or simply have a greater appreciation for this timeless art form. Recommended for ages 16+.
