The play concocts a poignant jazz tale around an eventful evening in the life of jazz great Miles Davis and the legendary members of his famed sextet from summer 1959 – including John Coltrane, Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb.
On a hot, humid night in August 1959, the Miles Davis sextet (arguably the greatest jazz band ever) continues its tenure at Birdland – an NYC jazz club named after the musical genius Charles Christopher Parker (“Bird”).
Sounds, rhythms, and demons take flight that night in ways that blur the distinction between music and living. Does the band play Birdland? Or does Birdland play Miles?
