“All stories have three acts. In the first, put your hero up a tree. In the second, throw rocks at the hero. In the third, get the hero out of the tree.”
— George B. Cohan
Beginning, middle, end. Since Aristotle’s Poetics, the “three-act” has ruled story structure in the western world. How does it work in writing for the big screen? How can it inform the story you want to tell? Help you adapt a story you’ve written? This class is for people who want to think like a screenwriter, understand how story = structure, and start writing scenes and developing scripts. We’ll explore story, scene, and character arcs; obstacles and stakes, rising tension, and resolution; how to create characters by putting them under pressure and making them choose; finding the DNA of your story, and how to put it in every scene, on every page. Drawing from films we know and love, your own ideas and experiences, and the best of greats like Robert McKee and Christopher Vogler, we’ll lay the groundwork, whether you’re a fiction or budding screenwriter, to start you on your own film-writing path.
