The Politics of Poetry: Dissenting Poetics
Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at 7:00PM
The Old American Can Factory
232 Third Street (Corner of Third Avenue)
When brilliant poets write about politics, the resulting works can break hearts, change minds, and redefine worlds. Renowned poets Kirill Medvedev (Russia), Valzhyna Mort (Belarus/U.S.), Marianna Kiyanovska (Ukraine), and Simone White (U.S.) channel historical trauma through their work; each writer melds shrewd political insights with stories of their own personal experiences. Their poems communicate the resonance and entanglements among art and politics, and make palpable the effects that class, gender, and other differences can have on the private spaces of life. In this special reading and conversation, the poets will share excerpts of their work. They will then discuss the historical and ongoing duties of the political poet—and the privilege, power, and pitfalls of channeling political dissent through written art.
The discussion will be moderated by Matvei Yankelevich.
