Reading to Write Better with Susan Rowe
Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at 6:30PM
801 S Capitol Blvd
Reading great stories, memoirs, and poems should make us better at the craft of writing, right? But how often do we read literature closely enough to examine the choices the author has made? How often do we take the time to ponder why those choices work? In this class, we'll read and discuss, dissect and diagram great examples of literary writing to glean vital knowledge about writing craft. We will look at how the best writers use language, mystery, settings, narrative techniques, irresistible openings, resonant endings and everything in between. Then we will practice those techniques in writing exercises you can return to again and again in your own writing practice.
By the end of the course, participants will have the literary equivalent of x-ray glasses for understanding what makes good writing work and a notebook full of drafts and exercises to move your writing practice forward.
