Delve into the long history of playing cards and printmaking in this class where students will design, carve, and print their own cards while considering the power of ink on paper in the digital age.
The history of playing cards is extensive, spanning over one thousand years. Just about every culture in the world has a version of playing cards. The prolific existence of playing cards across the globe is proof of a long history of cultural exchange, trading, and artistic practice. The power of the dissemination of information and goods has obviously changed with the digital age. With this class, we will look at the oldest form of printmaking (relief printmaking), and question where one of the oldest “games” on earth fits in with today’s technological world. Students will design their own playing card to print and will practice printing with ink on the printing press.
Teen Workshops are generously sponsored by Joyce B. Friedman
