Bloomington Roots + 505 Live Presents: Moira Smiley & Jason Wilber as part of the Hand Picked Music Series.

The Hand Picked Music Series brings in some of the nation’s most notable acoustic musicians to the 505 Theater at the FAR Center for Contemporary Arts. This beautiful space boasts vaulted ceilings and gorgeous acoustics all in an intimate space, seating 150.

Moira Smiley is a Singer/Composer who creates and performs new work for voices.  A musical polyglot, and vocal shape-shifter, her voice – and composing - are heard on feature films, BBC & PBS television programs, NPR, and on more than 60 albums. She accompanies herself with banjo, accordion, piano and percussive movement, and when she’s not leading her own group, moira smiley & VOCO, Moira has toured with Indie artist tUnE-yArDs, Irish super-group, SolasThe Lomax Project, and Billy Childs’ “Laura Nyro Re-Imagined”.  She’s also toured with Paul Hillier’s Theater of Voices and KITKA.  Recent solo performances include TED, Stravinsky’s ‘Les Noces’, the London Proms Festival, features on BBC Radio3, and ABC Australia’s Books & Arts programs. Moira’s recordings feature spare, vocally driven collections of warped traditional songs, original polyphony and body percussion.  She is a well-known choral composer (recent commissions included for Los Angeles Master Chorale) and arranger, with millions of singers around the world singing her works.  In 2018, she released a solo album and choral songbook called "Unzip The Horizon."
Moira is as accomplished as she is motivated, with wide-ranging interests and a kind of passionate inner vision of her own work which Barbara Thornton liked to call "having fire in her belly." - Ben Bagby, Founder/Director, Sequentia

Jason Wilber is an American singer, guitar player, songwriter, and recording artist. In addition to his work as a solo recording artist, he is also known as the long time lead guitar player for singer-songwriter John Prine. Other artists Jason has accompanied live or in the studio include Iris Dement, Greg Brown, Tom Russell, Sheryl Crow, Mary Gauthier, Todd Snider, Simrit, Hal Ketchum, Tim Grimm, Krista Detor, Greg Trooper, Carrie Newcomer, Kim Fox, Bill Wilson, and Over the Rhine.

Jason Wilber’s work with John Prine includes the Grammy Award winning CD Fair & Square, and the Grammy nominated CDs Live On Tour and In Spite of Ourselves (which spent 32 weeks on the Billboard Country Charts). In addition to playing guitar on John Prine’s 2017 album For Better or Worse, Jason also served as a Co-Executive Producer.

Slated for release in early 2020, Jason Wilber’s latest record, Time Traveler, plays like a radio signal emanating from some distant outpost. This record will be available at the show. Folk music from the future, with themes at once timeless and timely. Wilber strums stories from space stations and post-apocalyptic bunkers, alongside down to earth parables on the mysteries and truths of life. Wilber has had plenty of time to ponder the day dreams and fantastic journeys that wind up in his songs. For the last 23 years (and counting) he’s logged countless hours gazing out the windows of planes, trains, busses and cars while on the road with country/folk icon John Prine.
