An Adaptation of The Convent of Pleasure, by Margaret Cavendish
Adapted & Directed by Beth Schachter
The demise of Lady Happy’s father has left the fortunate heiress independently wealthy — and the Suitors are circling. But before they can strike, Happy gathers her inheritance and a group of like-minded women, and she forms a utopian Convent of Pleasure, an ideal community of celebratory female-focused pleasures behind unbreachable walls, where the women can live free of the rules of the patriarchy.
Enter the Princess — a mysterious figure from a foreign land. She and Lady Happy fall utterly in love, and at first, Lady Happy is troubled by her feelings, but comes to question why she could not “love a Woman with the same affection I could a Man?” But is the Princess who she appears to be? Is she there under false pretenses? Only time will tell…
A funny, flashy celebration of feminine pleasure and freedom, Happy Endings? brings Lady Cavendish’s utopian exploration to the 21st century.
