The Margaret Jensen Theatre

This is My Body, a new show, was collaboratively written and created by the performers! Student creators were asked to weave their experiences together to answer the questions: What is the experience of female bodies within Christianity? Are female bodies valued differently? Join a group of Gordon students to laugh, cry, and wrestle with themes of female embodiment and faith.

Director's Note:

“To be truly radical is to make hope possible, not despair convincing.” -Raymond Williams

Here you are, at a theatre performance, thinking that this is the whole point. Here we are, where we intended to arrive all along! Alas, you missed it. (The real work, that is.) The miraculous happened just weeks ago, in this very room. Now, we bear witness.

Together, in this theater, we shared our stories. We grappled with some of our most vulnerable questions. Cast members confided things previously unspoken. Hearts cracked open, little by little. And with each courageous action a community was born- one built on redemption, embodiment, aspirational wholeness. I want to be whole and I want wholeness for you too. But, how?

Oh, yes, and we did make a show. Our script leans on humor and play to invite you into our lived experiences. In our devising work, we embraced the words of poet Toi Derricotte: “joy is an act of resistance. We laughed a lot, every day. It buoyed us, kept us from sinking irretrievably to the depths, brought us back up for air. We hope it provides you deep breathes between the questions and stories too, and perhaps even builds a bridge between your own experiences and ours.

Thank you for joining this conversation, for partaking of This is My Body.
