EXCAVATE is an archaeological digging into Butoh dance process giving voice to new works in progress. EXCAVATE is raw, tangible, present, with dancer and audience existing on the same plane: No theatricalities. With The Brick Theater as a developmental space, dancers dig deep into their awareness using the platform for testing the collaboration between the conscious and unconscious selves, guided by emptying into internal landscapes, imagery, source material, and/or sound. EXCAVATE’s goal is to FOSTER production of new Butoh work, to CULTIVATE deeper connection WITHIN the Butoh community in Brooklyn and NYC and to allow witnesses to INVESTIGATE Butoh and to EXCAVATE their own internal pathways through the act of observation: dancers in alternate states of being.
This installation is a collaboration between Butoh dancer Scoop Slone and ambient DJ Jorge Sanders, for work to be presented in India the end of May at the International Behavioural Performance Art Festival-(VII) focusing on human rights and ecology.
Following the installation, 3 new Butoh works in progress will be presented furthering the journey into the hybridization of Butoh with other performance forms: as the artists EXCAVATE the relationship between and experimentation through the conscious/unconscious selves guided by source material, research, thematic imagery, and process.
Kori Koolman‘s Group Floor Plan is a movement piece that delves into the intimate and complex themes of domesticity, care, control, dependence, and loss. Born from a weekly workshop, part of koolman’s LABA fellowship, the work unfolds through raw improvisation and collective creation, where performers embody the tension between connection and isolation, power and vulnerability.

Genevieve Jencson‘s The Little Bird Ascends is a meditation on the cycles of life, death, and rebirth in nature and in our creative selves. The dance was inspired by a childhood song that haunts Genevieve’s memory. In this dance, we follow Little Bird on her journey as she dies, decomposes, mingles with the lifeforce, and is reborn to experience the full range of joy, pain, grief, and hope that this beautiful and complex world has to offer.
