Solvent-Free Oil Painting: Classical Techniques for Luminous Color, Light, and Beauty
Instructor: Lisa Lubarr
With a classically trained, figurative painter, come explore traditional painting techniques of the masters -- but without the use of any toxic or semi-toxic solvents! Products labeled as "odorless" solvents are less toxic to breathe but are still toxic to human health! Fortunately, there are many products now available to address this, and many techniques that allow for a painting process that is safe and non-toxic -- where we can enjoy the full range of possibilities inherent in the oil painting medium, without compromising -- and still work with the "fat over lean" rule for creating classical paintings in the "indirect" method, building up and glazing layers of paint (rather than completing works in one session), which creates richness and depth of color and value. An invaluable process to learn! The instructor will cover the following:
· special underpainting techniques using a variety of methods
· learn how to model form with oil paint in the classical painting tradition, helpful for still lives, landscapes, and figurative paintings!
· gain understanding of light and color, including warm and cool complements and color mixing principles for luminous effects
· learn techniques using semi-transparent darks and more opaque lights for beautiful rendition of forms in light
· improve your understanding of Art History, pigments and materials, composition, drawing, perspective and value, essential for paintings in the classical realist tradition.
No experience needed although some knowledge of drawing is helpful (yet not required). Welcome to an atelier-like class in traditional painting techniques, a wonderful foundation for all kinds of painting projects and aspirations! This is a supportive and FUN learning environment with a very encouraging and welcoming teacher!
