STRAUSS: Symphonic Fantasy from Die Frau ohne Schatten
Kodály’s Dances of Galánta opens the program with a virtuoso orchestral showpiece woven from verbunkos tunes the composer remembered from his childhood near the market town of Galánta. He wrote the work for the 80th Anniversary of the Budapest Philharmonic Society.
Ernest Bloch’s Suite Hébraïque—originally conceived for viola and orchestra in 1951—honors Jewish liturgical and folk inflections with modal lyricism and muscular orchestration. A rising Frost student soloist (to be announced) will bring Bloch’s impassioned lines to the foreground.
Richard Strauss closes the program with his Symphonic Fantasy from Die Frau ohne Schatten, a concert distillation of the 1919 opera’s vivid sonorities and psychological drama. First greeted coolly by critics, the score has since revealed its abundance of color, contrapuntal ingenuity, and radiant climaxes when lifted off the stage and into the hall.
