When Janet Howard and her son move into her grandmother’s home on H Street, she doesn’t expect her life to change. But after meeting the infamous singer Josephine St. Croix, reconnecting with an old flame, and forming an unexpected bond with their white neighbor, long-buried secrets begin to surface—threatening to pull them apart.
Set against the backdrop of 1960s D.C., this world premiere by award-winning multihyphenate artist Lady Dane Figueroa Edidi, Smoke explores love, found family, motherhood, and healing—inviting us to consider what it means when the community we build becomes our saving grace.

- Walk-up tickets will be available to purchase at the Modern Theatre box office on the day of the event, one hour before the event's scheduled start time, subject to availability.

Runtime: 2 hours & 30 minutes, with a 15 minute intermission
The Theater Offensive Mission: To present liberating art by, for, and about queer and trans people of color that transcends artistic boundaries, celebrates cultural abundance, and dismantles oppression. ---------- Please see below for important information to note before your visit to the Modern Theatre:
SEATING: This event has General Admission seating. All seats are first-come, first-served.
ARRIVAL: The Modern Theatre lobby and box office will open one hour before the event's scheduled start time. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the event's scheduled start time to check in at the box office and find a seat.
WAITLIST: If a performance is sold out and you need additional tickets, you may add your name to the waitlist by checking in at the Modern Theatre box office on the day of the performance. The box office opens one hour before each performance's scheduled start time. All unclaimed tickets will be released to the waitlist 10 minutes before the performance's scheduled start time.
LATE SEATING: Late seating will be permitted during appropriate breaks in the performance, at the Front of House Manager’s discretion. Please arrive on time, at least 15 minutes before your event's start time.

PROHIBITED & PERMITTED ITEMS: We encourage you to leave valuables, large bags, and other personal belongings at home. Outside food and beverages are not allowed and need to be consumed in the lobby or disposed of before entering the theatre.
There is no coat or bag check at the theatre, and prohibited items will not be stored onsite by venue management.
