Landscape tour: Cottonwood Loop
Sunday, November 8, 2026 at 11:00AM

The Chinati Foundation
1 Calvary Row
Marfa, TX 79843

In 1986, Donald Judd founded the Chinati Foundation as a site where art, architecture, and land come together to create a coherent context. This nature walk invites visitors to understand an essential element of that context.

Ethyn Maki, land fellow, will lead the 1.5-mile walk exploring Judd’s first landscape project: planting 22 cottonwood trees along the property’s western edge and their relationship to his 15 untitled works in concrete (1980–1984). Topics discussed include the manufacturing of the concrete pieces, the site's history, and current conservation concerns.

Walks will take place in sunshine or light rain; more extreme weather may result in cancellation. A water bottle, long pants, and sturdy hiking shoes are recommended. Participants should be comfortable walking 1.5 miles in about an hour.
