In the midst of the Harlem Renaissance W.E.B. Dubois one of the greatest intellects of the 20th century was busy trying to secure his family legacy. Disapproving of his daughter’s choice of a musician as a future husband he subsequently asserted his right to choose the man she should marry to meet his class and status aspirations. Countee Cullen was his choice whom he believed would make the perfect husband for his daughter Yolanda. The marriage was reported to be the marriage of the century. But it was trouble before it started.
