Animation workshops are a fantastic way to engage, empower, educate and inspire children and allow them to creatively express their ideas while learning invaluable skills. Exploring the historic and present day reality in the artwork of artists Maeve D'Arcy and Lisa O'Donnell’s exhibition Trasatlantacha, students will take part in a group workshop in stop-motion animation. Stop-motion animation, also known as “Claymation” or “Stop-frame” animation, is the technique used in film favorites such as The Nightmare Before Christmas, Gumby, James and the Giant Peach, Jack Frost, and more.

Participants will devise together an idea based on histories, memories and experiences and produce a storyboard for their film, make characters from clay and props from paint, colored pencil, collage and mixed media works. Children can see their work come to life on camera, producing animated films 1-2 minutes long.

Young animators’ films will be made available online after the workshop, so that you can share it with your friends and family.

Irish Arts Center’s Afternoon Art Parties are designed to provide children with the chance to interact with the season’s artists and performers, and take part in the creative process. Activities and events will relate to the artistic programs we present, offering the chance for parents to expand the Irish Arts Center experience for their children.

For ages 7-11
