Percussionist-turned-wizard Michael Folker juxtaposes music with showstopping magical illusions in this performance of the Chicago Philharmonic Chamber Players (cp2). Violinist Daniela Folker and percussionists Joel Cohen and Christopher Folker join him in combining melody, rhythm, and exotic instruments from around the world in a one-of-a-kind afternoon your whole family is sure to enjoy.
We begin with “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” perhaps the best-known work of John Philip Sousa, who earned himself the nickname “March King” for his military band compositions that are still favorites at patriotic occasions today.
Russian composer Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky’s whimsical Nutcracker has been adapted by musicians, choreographers, and filmmakers for over a century. Here, two tunes from this holiday favorite – “Waltz of The Flowers” and “Arabian Dance” – get a special, magical twist.
Two American contemporaries, Leroy Anderson and Aaron Copland, share the spotlight towards the end of the program. Our musicians explore the hip-moving musical phenomenon of syncopation with Anderson’s lighthearted The Syncopated Clock. To close, they perform Copland’s vivacious “Hoedown,” putting a worthy exclamation mark on this extraordinary afternoon.
