15CU1: J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion
Friday, April 24, 2015 at 8:00PM

The Church of the Ascension
221 W 107th St
New York, NY 10027

Celebrating the 330th anniversary of the composer's birth, the Barnard-Columbia Chorus and Chamber under the direction of Dr. Gail Archer will present J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244). Known as one of the greatest pieces in the Western repertory, the Matthäus-Passion sets ch 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew to music composed for solo voices, double choir, and double orchestra, upon a text written by Picander. Tenor Ian Bostridge, a frequent performer of the Evangelist, comments, "I think the St. Matthew Passion is one of the greatest pieces in the Western repertory, and to start one's journey to understanding that piece is a very important point in anybody's life." This monumental work in the canon of classical sacred music will feature the soloists and singers of the Barnard-Columbia Chorus conducted by Prof. Gail Archer.
