John Minihan: Beckett and His World (Fall 2017)
Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at 6:00PM

Irish Arts Center
553 West 51st. Street
New York, NY 10019

Walter Asmus directed Waiting for Godot in the XXXX, author Edna O’Brien and publisher John Calder made up his circle in London, actor Lisa Dwan gave life to Not I as never before. These are some of the luminaries who made up a world of Beckett, both during his life, and after his passing. John Minihan captures their essence in black and white portraiture, including his iconic images of Beckett himself, a reluctant subject who rarely posed.

Minihan first met Beckett in 1980 and their friendship led to the creation of some of the most remarkable and iconic photographic images of the writer. His portraits are world famous; their significance is further heightened by their relative rarity. At our artist talk, John will perform from his spoken word piece Beckett and the Wake, recounting his meetings Beckett.

John Minihan photographed IAC’s cultural exhibitions To Love Two Countries (and New England series), a photographic celebration of the men and women who immigrated to the United States in the early half of the twentieth century.

“Minihan’s gift is to be at once penetrating and discreet, probing and respectful, close-up and impersonal.” —author John Banville
