The music of Canadian trumpeter, flugelhornist, and composer Kenny Wheeler (1930-2014) can be deeply lyrical but also full of unexpected turns—from “soppy romantic,” as Wheeler himself once called it, to prickly avant-garde. The Frost Concert Band, conducted by Nick Smart and anchored by bassist and composer Dave Holland, takes up the challenge.
