From “Bei Mir Bistu Sheyn” to “Tumbalalaika,” traditional Jewish music gets a burst of youthful enthusiasm with the Junior Klezmer Orchestra.
20 Middle and High School Students from all over Chicago and the suburbs meet to rehearse every other weekend throughout the school year. These talented musicians master the Art of Klezmer—lively dance and theater music from Eastern Europe and America in the early 1900s.
Under the leadership of Alex Koffman and Lori Lippitz of the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band, this youth ensemble delivers old music with fresh energy. The Junior Klezmer Ensemble is returning for its 4th year to the Skokie Theatre.
Many Junior Klezmer Orchestra graduates become professional musicians, including the current Musical Director of Hamilton on Broadway in New York.
The Junior Klezmer Orchestra is a project of The Klezmer Music Foundation, an Illinois not for profit organization.
