Buskirk-Chumley Theater
114 E. Kirkwood Ave.
Bloomington, IN 47408

A classic tale of redemption based on a true story, this film follows a small-town basketball team on its improbable run to the Indiana high school championship game. Coach Norman Dale (Gene Hackman) has numerous hurdles to overcome: a feisty teacher determined to keep the best player from going out for the team, a town chock full of second-guessing fathers, and a group of undisciplined athletes. Joining Hackman’s volatile character is the basketball-loving town drunk, a role which earned actor Dennis Hopper an Oscar nomination. The story is inspired by the Milan, Indiana Indians' run for the state title in 1954.

Hoosiers was written by Angelo Pizzo, a Bloomington native and IU alum, who will join us to welcome you to the event and answer audience questions after the screening!

The film was directed by David Anspaugh, also an IU alum, in his feature directorial debut. In 2001, Hoosiers was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." Hoosiers grossed over $28 million and received two Oscar nominations: Dennis Hopper for Best Supporting Actor and Jerry Goldsmith for Best Original Score. In June 2008, the American Film Institute (AFI) revealed its "Ten Top Ten" — the best ten films in ten classic American film genres — after polling over 1,500 people from the creative community. Hoosiers was acknowledged as the fourth best film in the sports genre.
