Helping his mother clean out the junk (including a dead cat) in the house of her recently-deceased packrat sister, a lonely young boy bonds with a neighboring 80-something Korean War vet. There isn’t much in the way of plot here, but the nuanced characterizations are extraordinary and the film does that rare thing: it warms the heart without insulting our intelligence. Produced by James Schamus, it was shot in Poughkeepsie, where the writers met at Vassar. Played the Berlin Film Festival.

Directed by Andrew Ahn; Written by Hannah Bos, Paul Thureen; 2019; Drama; USA; Cast: Brian Dennehy, Hoing Chau, Lucas Jaye. Runtime: 83 min.
