A lot of films have been made about kids, but you don’t hear of many being made by kids. Jon Alpert has been changing this situation. Ever since 1978, the award-winning documentary filmmaker’s Downtown Community Television Center (DCTV)’s PRO-TV program has been teaching video production to underprivileged students. And in the process, he’s given kids an outlet to address issues in their own lives and in their communities, and the program encourages them to improve their grades and to graduate from high school. On April 13th, he’ll be joined in The Greene Space with four recent graduates of DCTV’s Media Fellowship training program—Natalie Setoute, Richard Memminger, Sandra Appiah, and Rosalino Ramos—who discuss and screen excerpts from the documentary films they created in the program.
