The New Center for Arts and Culture presents this program in partnership with the Whitehead Institute for Biomedial Research
Author Jon Entine and geneticist Yaniv Erlich explore how the revolution in genetic research over the past few decades has transformed the way we think about Jewish identity, providing new insights into Jewish health and history while also sparking intense debates around subjects like intermarriage and “Jewish intelligence.” How can genetic research help us unravel the early history of the Diaspora? How can it help us understand the health risks we might pass on to our children? How do genetic notions of Jewish identity conflict or coexist with those based on religious or cultural affiliation? And can a swab to the inner cheek change how you look at yourself? Jon Entine is the author of Abraham’s Children: Race, Identity, and the DNA of the Chosen People. Dr. Yaniv Erlich is a Principal Investigator at the Whitehead Institute; his research focuses on the genetic basis of human diseases, including Jewish genetic disorders.
Their conversation will be moderated by Paula Apsell, Executive Producer of NOVA and Director of the Science Unit at WGBH.
