SUGAR SPACE STUDIO FOR THE ARTS PRESENTS 2011 ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: RUMBLE MOTION JAWBONE / NANCY SIMPSON CARTER “A Tale From the Land of Frightful Dreams” is a twisted fairytale-adventure-saga that is at once beautiful and grotesque, spectacular and disturbing. Merging theater, Butoh, Circus and modern dance, Carter creates a world where excitement, danger and transformation are around every corner. In this work dream will become nightmare and then dream again repeatedly, each time with more depth and humanity. The story ultimately centers on a single character as he travels from simplicity to curiosity, then to tragedy and finally to a greater understanding of the brutal and extraordinary workings of the world’s inhabitants. The events will be simultaneously iconic and haunted, magnifying our self-rapport through empathy for the character. Michael Watkiss, with his training in Butoh inhabits the protagonist with a near autistic self-enclosing, never seeming to reconcile the quickly changing nature of his personal history. Also set to premiere in this show: THE NEW BLOOD DANCE PROJECT The New Blood Dance Project is based on a project created by North Carolina dance company Choreo Collective almost a decade ago. In it a “non-dancer” makes a piece of choreography. The NBDP gives this “non-dancer” the resources and guidance necessary to create successful choreography, performed by professional dancers. By exchanging ideas and methodologies with people who are not trained professional dancers the dance community can grow richer and have more varied work to offer audiences. As the first New Blood choreographer professional Rolfer Paul Wirth sets his hand to creating a modern dance that reflects his intimate acquaintance with the human body. He draws on his training in music composition and his dry sense of humor to create a dance that is ironic and visceral.
