Oh Rumbles of Joy!' looks at the intersection of Spirit and Thought through the point of view of a sculptor. Throughout the play, a moving sculpture is created by the slow movements of Thoughts and Spirit within marble. It takes place in a sculpting studio, not in Soho or the Lower East Side, but in the Bronx. The play asks: What is the process of the artist in creation; how do you see from within versus from without; and how do you define the visible from the invisible? Sometimes hazy and dreamy, sometimes terse and percussive, and sometimes realistically and hysterically funny, O Rumbles of Joy! celebrates movement and language while embracing the humanity of the main character. Because the play is about the act of creating, creative audience members can easily empathize with the main character. They can also enjoy the critique and perspective of the chorus members. While telling a clear story, O Rumbles of Joy! considers the living architecture. Does the living architecture contain its own special laws based on geometrical and spatial experiments? How is the living architecture a series of rhythmic movements? What role do thought and spirit play in contributing to the living architecture, and how do we find patience and fortitude in development?
