2012 Terence Blanchard Presents: A Concert of American Music--Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra
Gusman Concert Hall
Friday, November 30, 2012 at 8:00PM

UM Gusman Concert Hall
1314 Miller Drive
Coral Gables, FL 33146

Terence Blanchard presents the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra in a captivating concert that opens with Aaron Copland's Pulitzer-Prize winning "Appalachian Spring" Ballet Suite for 13 instruments, plus world premieres of compositions by Mancini Fellows: "The Pilgrim" by David Pegel, and "Asa, Zóio e Matulão" by Rafael da Lima de Piccolotto, featuring similar instrumentation. The second half features Duke Ellington’s "Nutcracker Suite," featuring jazz interpretations of Tchaikovsky’s beloved melodies by Duke Ellington and his collaborator Billy Strayhorn, performed here by Terence Blanchard and a big band comprised of Mancini Fellows. The Henry Mancini Institute at the Frost School of Music assembles the very best classical and jazz student musicians from around the world and trains them to play a full range of musical genres– from traditional and contemporary classical styles, to pop, jazz, rock, hip-hop, Afro-Cuban, Latin, Asian, and other world music. Pre-Concert Lecture starts at 7:15.
