SECRETS: The Untold Story of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung tells the story of the intense, personal relationship between Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung in the early years of psychoanalysis, 1907 - 1913. It is based on the 1000 letters exchanged between Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, two of the most innovative and influential thinkers of the 20th century. Freud was about 20 years older than Jung who was looking for higher mountains to climb when they first met in March 1907 in Freud's home in Vienna. The relationship between Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung followed the classic arc of a deeply felt love "affair". While there is absolutely no evidence that their feelings for each other crossed the line into physical expression, there is ample evidence through the frequency and the scope of their letters that they had a deep, emotional involvement with each other. While they were brilliant and helped many patients identify and diffuse inner complexities, neither Freud nor Jung could successfully deal with their own inner issues. First a patient at the Burgholzli in Zurich, Antonia "Toni" Wolff became Jung's mistress and confidant for forty years, virtually sharing the home in Kusnacht with Jung's wife Emma. Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung impacted all intellectual and artistic aspects of the 20th Century. Separately and together, they explored the murky waters of unconscious complexes, hidden desires and secret sexual practices as no individual had done before. To be free, we all must come to face and integrate what we have kept secret for years.
