2013 FSOM Colorful Works for Winds by Messiaen, Wilson, Bolcom—Frost Wind Ensemble
Gusman Concert Hall
Thursday, November 21, 2013 at 8:00PM

Gusman Concert Hall
1314 Miller Drive
Coral Gables, FL 33146

A consortium of wind ensembles throughout the world has commissioned new works for the genre in recent years, and the results are striking. The latest is Concerto for Tuba and Wind Ensemble by Dana Wilson, a consortium world premiere at this concert, featuring Frost faculty master artist Sam Pilafian as soloist. Frost Wind Ensemble also presents Symphony for Band composed by Grammy Award winning composer William Bolcom (Musical America’s 2007 Composer of the Year) and Oliver Messiaen’s fascinating Oiseaux exotiques (“Exotic Birds”), for piano and small wind orchestra, a highly challenging sound fantasy that incorporates a complex piano part, winds and percussion emulating 47 different bird calls along with complex rhythms from ancient Greek and Hindu sources.
