Great Romance is play about heightened, obsessive and romantic feelings between self-imposed exiles living in an anachronistic, isolated small town somewhere on the east coast. Different degrees and permutations of love form across a landscape divided by class differences and divergent artistic/life proclivities. The subjects of this play often find that love is finer experienced in words than in actions, tethered to the earth by mundane obligation as they desire to fill inescapable voids with each other. This play is written in a panache of prose and poetry, using thick and sometimes archaic language to convey a timeless space where people make love with words as much as they do their bodies. Great Romance draws upon such classic artworks as Anne Carson's Beauty of the Husband, Ingmar Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage and Charles Dickens' Great Expectations to contemplate the disappointments or surprising joys of reality.
