HENRY MANCINI INSTITUTE ORCHESTRA ANDRÉ RAPHEL, guest conductor TERENCE BLANCHARD, artistic director SCOTT FLAVIN, resident conductor MARK O’CONNOR, violin, artist-in-residence GARY KELLER, saxophone; JOHN DAVERSA, trumpet, ABBY YOUNG, violin A celebratory concert in support of the Frost School’s Henry Mancini Institute (HMI) that opens with Scott Flavin conducting new compositions by HMI fellow Rafael Piccolotto de Lima and faculty Stephen Guerra and Gary Lindsay. Featured soloists include HMI violinist Abby Young and faculty artists Gary Keller and John Daversa. The second half of the concert features Frost Distinguished Alumnus André Raphel conducting the HMI Orchestra with multi-Grammy winning composer and violin virtuoso Mark O’Connor as soloist on his own five-movement Improvised Violin Concerto (subtitled Fire, Air, Water, Earth, and Faith). The work is described as “a phenomenon” and “utterly groundbreaking.” It is the first concerto to feature an entirely improvised solo part over a through-composed orchestral score. It opens with passion, intensity and otherworldliness and concludes with an uplifting celebration of the human spirit. Don’t miss it!
