The Frost Wind Ensemble presents a joyful celebratory concert to commemorate Professor Gary Green’s retirement this May after decades of outstanding musical leadership as their esteemed conductor and director of bands at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, who also served as chair of the Department of Instrumental Performance. To honor the occasion, the ensemble premieres four new works by select composers whose careers have grown and intertwined with Green’s in glorious fashion.

The concert opens with the world premiere of Thomas Sleeper’s Chamber Symphony No. 5 featuring Frost faculty artists grouped as a string quintet, woodwind quintet, with solo saxophone, percussion and piano. Next, the Frost Wind Ensemble and Professor Green perform the world premiere of Urban Nocturnes by Michael Colgrass, featuring three faculty soloists (Margaret Donaghue, clarinet; Ross Harbaugh, cello; Santiago Rodriguez, piano) performing in contrasting moods. Then, the group presents the world premiere of Sideman by Mason Bates, featuring Frost percussion faculty artist Svet Stoyanov as soloist. The concert concludes with the world premiere of Hosannas by David Maslanka, a joyful multi-movement piece with varied attitudes and reflections including faculty tenor Tony Boutte on the final poem by Richard Beale entitled “A Litany for Courage and the Seasons.”
