Among the members of the Greater Boston Jewish community are a sizeable group who came to the area from South Africa. As much as we interact and socialize, the story of the Jews of South Africa is not well known. Author Neville Frankel, who came to Boston at the age of fourteen, takes us with him on his journey back to South Africa for an adult perspective on the legacy of his past. Through the lens of his personal story and the wellspring of research he did for his novel Bloodlines, Frankel imparts a compelling sense of what it meant for black and white South Africans to live under apartheid, and the experiences of the Jewish community in South Africa during the anti-apartheid movement. Over authentic South African food and drink, and with the soaring music of South Africa performed in Zulu and English by The Earth Tones of the New England Conservatory, the evening will provide a moving perspective on a Jewish community and a country that suffered great turmoil in its quest for social justice and equality.
