15CU1: La Lucrezia/Venus & Adonis

"The Columbia University New Opera Workshop is pleased to present its first full-staged opera production: a double bill of Baroque works. Handel's ""La Lucrezia"" is a searing retelling of the rape of Lucretia and features one of Handel's most devastating scores. Though normally performed in concert form, ""Lucrezia"" will be a fully staged performance. It is paired with John Blow's pivotal ""Venus & Adonis."" Taken from an episode of Ovid's Metamorphoses, the mythical lovers enter a game that quickly turns tragic. Together, these works reflect on the abuse and adversity that can affect even the most intimate and caring of relationships.
*N.B. - This production contains graphic references to sexual assault and depictions of violence."Sponsored in part by the Arts Initiative at Columbia University. This funding is made possible through a generous gift from The Gatsby Charitable Foundation.
