This class will examine the past, explore the present, and consider the future of the Irish short story – a literary form often considered to be one for which Irish writers have a natural talent. It aims to serve both as an introduction for those new to Irish literature and as a way for those more experienced to continue to pursue their interest. Each week, we will discuss a selection of short fiction by a mix of canonical writers and those who are less well known, asking questions of theme, style, and many other features. The following books (any edition) are required: Dubliners. James Joyce. Walk the Blue Fields. Claire Keegan. The Oxford Book of Irish Short Stories. Ed. William Trevor. Tuesdays, 7pm-8:30pm
