Hear one of today’s finest pianists, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, in the piece he says exudes “utter joy” and leaves every member of the audience and orchestra with a “smile on their face.” Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F is a work Thibaudet has championed since he was 14; the pianist is known for his intuitive grasp of Gershwin’s brilliant fusion of jazz, blues, and classical styles.

Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements was the first major work he composed after emigrating to the United States. Clearly influenced by the sounds of his new home, the piece is full of uniquely American soundscapes, jazzy riffs, and Hollywood flourishes.

The concert will also feature Arnold Schoenberg’s Variations for Orchestra, the first twelve-tone piece for large orchestra.
