Dale Underwood, saxophone

NEA Jazz Master Branford Marsalis joins the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra for a compelling and rare collaboration, alongside distinguished saxophonist Dale Underwood. Bringing together two master artists whose careers have shaped generations of performers, the evening explores the full expressive range of the saxophone, from lyrical nuance to bold virtuosity.

As an NEA Jazz Master and multiple Grammy Award–winning artist, Branford Marsalis stands as one of the most influential saxophonists of his generation, bringing unmistakable virtuosity, depth, and improvisational brilliance to the Frost stage.

The program includes a newly commissioned work by Steve Guerra, written especially for Marsalis and Underwood, placing their distinct musical voices in dynamic dialogue with one another and with the orchestra.

With Marsalis, Underwood and the Mancini Institute Orchestra together, this performance becomes a powerful tribute to the enduring legacy of the instrument, and an evening that celebrates mentorship, innovation, and the continuing evolution of the saxophone in today’s musical landscape.
