Acclaimed poet Cecilia Woloch brings a selection of her work to Piccolo Spoleto. Tsigan: The Gypsy Poem is a poetic meditation that intertwines Woloch's personal journey of identity with the larger forces in the world that have shaped the fate and fortunes of the Roma people, also known as the gypsies. This spoken word event will also include musical accompaniment.
Cecilia Woloch is the author of six collections of poems and a novel. She is an NEA Fellow, a Fulbright Scholar, and the recipient of numerous other awards, including a Pushcart Prize and inclusion in the Best American Poetry series. The text of her second book, Tsigan: The Gypsy Poem, has been the basis for multi-lingual, multi-media performances across the U.S. and Europe and was published in French translation in 2014 by Scribe-l’Harmattan. She has traveled the world as a teacher and writer and currently serves on the faculty of the creative writing program at Georgia College & State University.
Dusty Woodruff is a classical guitarist who studied at the University of Georgia under renowned pedagogue and protégé of Andrés Segovia, John Sutherland. He has performed, as part of The Athens Guitar Duo, throughout the United States and Europe, and in cities in the People’s Republic of China and in Russia. Woodruff is also active as a soloist and concerto performer and has conducted master-classes across the world. He heads the Guitar Department at Georgia College & State University.
