A real life 19th century American western adventure story, "Carvalho's Journey" (2015) tells the extraordinary story of the photographer Solomon Nunes Carvalho (1815-1897), an observant Sephardic Jew born in Charleston, South Carolina, who accompanied J. C. Fremont's fifth expedition across the Rockies. Visually ambitious and extensively researched, the film features interviews with scholars and writers, rare archival materials, original landscape cinematography, and re-creations of the daguerreotype process to weave together a compelling narrative of the expansion of the American continent as seen through the eyes of a trailblazing American artist.
