Have you ever ached for something sad or beautiful and then intentionally played music that you know will make that ache worse? One of the many ridiculous things we humans do! With quirky humor and charm, Sarah Ruhl's Melancholy Play observes that melancholy is a different place to be than despair or depression—a place we can choose to leave, though we may not want to. The heroine, Tilly, is melancholy personified. Her melancholy is so alluring, every stranger she meets falls in love with her. As Tilly suddenly becomes happy and wreaks havoc on the lives of her paramours, the play takes the metaphor of an almond to an absurd end.
 Directed by Jill Rogati
Note: Melancholy Play includes themes of depression, suicidal ideation, mild adult content, and sexual innuendos. Almonds will be used on stage.

A Christian Perspective on the Performing Arts As a Christian liberal arts college, Gordon College is committed to producing a wide variety of plays that assess the human condition, raise moral questions and acquaint students with the history of theatre. The words and views expressed in the plays do not necessarily represent the positions or opinions of Gordon College, its faculty, staff, or student body. They are, however, carefully vetted for their power to engage the imagination, challenge assumptions, reflect culture, encourage dialogue, raise questions, and affirm truth.
