Sharp and Fine - Queen of Knives

Z Space
450 Florida Street
San Francisco, CA 94110

San Francisco-based dance company Sharp & Fine, directed by sisters Megan and Shannon Kurashige, presents the world premiere of Queen of Knives, an evening-length dance adaptation of the poem by beloved and internationally best-selling author Neil Gaiman. The poem’s brief narrative about a child who visits his grandparents and goes to a magic show provides the starting point for a work that examines love, loss, regret, and age through the experiences of youth and the mysterious, transformative lens of stage magic. The seven performers push the boundaries between classical ballet technique and contemporary experience, using richly textured and physically rigorous movement to bring the audience into a story filled with visceral, surprising, and beautiful images. “Queen of Knives” was originally published in 1995 and has since reached a broad audience in print form, but this will be the first time it is adapted for the stage. Sharp & Fine’s adaptation, choreographed and directed by the Kurashiges with the permission and encouragement of the author, translates this vivid and striking poem into a full-length narrative dance piece that explores the potential of storytelling in dance with theatrical finesse. Choreography and Direction: Megan and Shannon Kurashige Performers: Eric Garcia, Katharine Hawthorne, Megan Kurashige, Shannon Kurashige, Shannon Leypoldt, Carson Stein, Megan Wright
